Somerset House welcomes back the London Design Biennale with this year’s theme being Resonance. The world’s most exciting designers, innovators, and Cultural Bodies come together again to promote international collaboration through Exhibitions and Installations - that focus on demonstrating the ambition to create universal solutions to problems that concern us all.

This year’s focus will be on ‘A Forest for Change’ designed by Es Devlin, which will be taking over the inside and outside of Somerset House. The aim is to drive awareness of the United Nations’ Global Goals for Sustainable Development in order to eradicate poverty, fight inequality and tackle the climate crisis.

As businesses try to become more environmentally friendly, the Biennales centerpiece “Forest for Change” which is made up of 400 trees that span across a variety of types will create a magnificent green centerpiece in the Somerset House courtyard in order to inspire. The Pavilion will offer a journey of discovery and interaction, with a “Global Goals” installation in the central clearing of the forest.

An interesting point to note, 31% of the entire audience of LDB in 2019 were Millennials. This is down to the fact that being environmentally friendly is at the core of many Gen Z and Millennials values. This is echoed by how they consume and what they choose to consume. Many businesses have had to evolve in order to keep up with this social change as many of their customers are of the Millennial generation.

The London Design Biennale has helped to show the youth the drastic changes that need to happen in order for us to live in a fairer and more environmentally friendly society. We are now seeing Millennials demanding change through their buying power, which means that businesses need to change to the motion of the ocean in order to stay afloat.

The London Design Biennale offers a great insight into how businesses must change in order to stay relevant and appealing to an ever-changing market audience. LDB offers us an insight into how we can implement green changes to the way we produce and consume. It has inspired us to take the next step in committing to the Green Revolution by, asking our employees to take public transportation as much as they can and to shut down computers at the end of the day. We also are planning to plant a Pear Tree. We have updated our entire distribution fleet with fully electric or hybrid vehicles in an effort to significantly reduce our impact. We want everyone who works with us to feel at peace, knowing that we are doing our utmost to care for the environment we all share.

We hope that we can inspire other businesses and that they will follow suit and take the next step in becoming more environmentally friendly.
