Earth Day - 2021

RollingHills.jpeg

In 1970 on April 22nd, we saw the first-ever Earth Day take place in the United States of America. This was inspired by the anti-war movement pioneered by students. Over 20 million attended, and at the time it was 10% of the total US population. It became an internationally recognized day in 1990, and in 2010 the world committed to planting 1 billion trees, this was reached in 2012. Jumping ahead 4 years later, we saw the world again come together to sign the Paris Agreement, aiming to lower net emissions to 2°C above pre-industrial temperatures.

Everyone is doing their bit for Earth Day, and that includes us at Pear, and that is why this year we are asking all of our employees to:

  • Take public transportation.

  • Shut down computers at the end of the day.

  • Do 1 Thing Initiative - http://www.earthdayinitiative.org/dojust1thing

  • Plant Pear Trees - Company initiative.

  • Use reusable water bottles

  • Buy vegan products to help cut carbon footprint as animal-based food has a higher carbon footprint compared to plant-based food.

  • Participate in an education meeting to discuss how we can reduce our strain on the environment as a business.

Earth Day 2021 started on April 20th, with a global youth climate summit led by Earth Uprising. The global youth summit will consist of panels, speeches, discussions, and special messages with today’s youth climate activists including Greta Thunberg, Alexandria Villaseñor, and Licypriya Kangujam. It will be concluded by the Hip Hop Caucus and their partners, who will present the “We Shall Breathe” virtual summit.

On April 21st, Education International will lead the “Teach for the Planet: Global Education Summit.” Finally, on the 22nd of April, the Biden Administration’s “global climate summit” invites 40 World Leaders to a Leaders Summit on Climate at the White House.

Earth Day offers another chance for individuals as well as businesses to implement green changes to the way they produce and consume. We hope that we can inspire other businesses and that they will follow suit and take the next step to commit to the Green Revolution.
